Yanshui Fireworks Festival (鹽水蜂炮) travel video shot in February, 2012; appropriately enough at the beginning of the Year of the Dragon.
This was a pretty insane journey to a pretty crazy festival, in fact one of the most dangerous festivals in the world (the fifth most dangerous, according to askmen.com.) I spent a late night (a school night, in fact) getting pelted by bottle rockets and dancing over firecrackers underfoot. I inhaled enough smoke to equal a carton of cigarettes (if cigarettes were made of cheap white gunpowder) and lost my hearing for a few days (after having my nine year-old students on mute for a day, I can’t say that this as such a bad thing.) At any rate, I’m pretty damned proud of this, which is fascinating since I usually hate the sound of my own voice. This was my first attempt at narration in a video and I’ve gotta say that this is something I’m not afraid to try doing again. Thoughts? If my voice sucks, this is your last chance to say something and save the content of my youtube channel, if not crushing my hopes of some day doing talk radio on an AM station.
For more on the history of Yanshui, and why the hell the Yanshui-ians feel the need to pelt themselves with incendiary devices, check out this post I wrote.
