No actual battles in this sensationally-titled al Jazeera TV doc, but some horrific, provocative and interesting anecdotes from former members of Japan’s secretive criminal organizations.
Like many of al Jazeera’s documentary efforts, this feels like part of something larger and more cinematic… and like many of the documentaries that air on the channel; it may very well be. Al Jazeera often airs truncated and abridged versions of feature documentaries, such as Michael Glawogger’s Working Man’s Death. Unfortunately Battling the Yakuza has a stifling BBC-style narration that doesn’t really lend itself to the brilliant images & harrowing interviews on display.
